Our Cats

Cat pics

"Thousands of years ago, cats were worshiped as gods. Cats have never forgotten this."
  T. S. Elliot.

We get so much joy from our cats. They are our constant companions, our buddies, our little furry children. We love them up and spoil them rotten. They more than return our affection - they amaze us with their serenity, awe us with their grace, and make us laugh at their silliness.

We've been very lucky to have known seven wonderful cats so far. Each of them has been unique with their own little quirks and charms. They all have brought joy into our lives, and every one of them holds a very special place in our hearts.

Cat picsQuincy was Gelina's lover boy. We lost him December 3, 2002. He was the first cat we've ever lost. He was the best cat ever, and we still miss him dearly. Cat picsWe lost our sweetheart Spencer to feline leukemia on March 12, 2004. He was only a year and a half old. Cat picsSamantha was our 17 year-old, pretty, black cat with the kryptonite eyes. We lost our princess in September of 2005.
Cat picsThis is Gus. We adopted him on March 21st of 2004, about a week after we lost Spencer. He is very sweet and gentle and loves his little brother Owen and his new sister Sophie. Cat picsOur boy Owen on the day we got him - July 31, 2004. Just 8 weeks old and already he had the makings of a fine cat. He and Gus are best buddies, and he takes good care of Sophie. Cat picsOur new girl Sophie. We got her November 21, 2008. Just 8 weeks old and she was already running the house.
Cat picsHere's Tucker O. - yeah, that makes 4 cats. I know. He was an orphaned farm kitten. We adopted him at 5 weeks old on May 25, 2009.

Cat picsSophie's 1st birthday photo.

She's really grown up and is the softest, longest, prettiest cat.

Cat picsTucker at 5 months.

He's going to be a huge cat if he ever grows into those paws.

Cat pics

Sophie and Owen hanging out on the back of the love seat.
Cat pics

Gus with his tail wrapped around his nose.

Cat picsOwen in profile - he's one handsome cat and he knows it.

Cat pics
Gus looks ticked off, but he was really just starting a yawn.
Cat pics

All the kids settled in for a nap in the sun.
Cat pics

Owen helping Gelina knit.

Cat picsTucker was very pleased that he had managed to shred almost an entire roll of paper towels and then spread the remains all over the basement floor.

Cat pics

Tucker thinks a warm laundry basket is the best place to sleep.

Cat picsTucker likes napping in this old crock. We put a comforter in there to make it more comfortable.

Cat picsWhen Gus stretches out, he really stretches out.

Cat pics

Tucker hanging out in the sink. Dave had to negotiate with him so he could shave.
Cat pics

Sophie checking out her new water dish.

Cat picsTucker trying to decide if the Christmas tree is good to eat or not.

He and Sophie were so rough on the tree this year that we didn't even bother to hang to ornaments.

Cat pics

Tucker loves Christmas because Christmas means more boxes for him to play in.
Cat pics

Hey there, what's for dinner? Where's my plate?
Cat pics

Tucker and Sophie just hanging out.

Cat picsOwen likes to sit on Gelina's knitting and guard it. So when she knits on the kitchen table he thinks that means that he gets to be on the table too.

Cat pics

Tucker loves his sister Sophie. He is "her" kitten..

Tucker versus the laser pointer.
Cat pics

Tucker "helping" Gelina knit by running off with part of her project.
Cat pics

Gelina's sister-in-law sat Tucker in Dave's arms and it was all over. When we got him he was still mostly bottle-fed.
Cat pics

Gelina was a little resistant ("Four cats! Are you crazy?") But it didn't take her very long to come around.
Cat pics

Tucker peeking out from under the hutch.
Cat pics

Most of our early Tucker photos look a lot like this. He's incredibly fast for such a little guy.

Cat picsTucker is so small and fast that we had to put a bell on him.

This is the smallest collar they make and it just hangs off him.

Cat pics

Tucker playing - look at the size of those paws.
Cat pics

Owen and Tucker meeting for the first time. Owen has no idea what he's getting into.
Cat pics

Sophie has done a fine job taking care of Tucker and trying to keep him groomed.
Cat picsTucker stalking his stuffed playmate. We don't think he knows it's not a real cat yet.
Cat pics1.4 pounds and growing bigger every day.

We weaned him off of the bottle. He has taken to soft kitten food with a vengeance, and even likes the dry kibbles.
Cat picsThe tiny tiger stalking Dave's camera.
Cat pics

Sophie telling Tucker the secrets of being a good cat. Tucker's Mom died when he was just 2 weeks old, so there was a lot that she never got to teach him.
Cat picsFour tails around the food dish.

Tucker dove right into morning feedings.
Cat pics

Tucker really likes chasing the stuffed mouse around his toy.
Cat picsEmo cat - Tucker is not at all happy about the collar with a bell.

We told him it could come off when he got a little bigger and we all learned to walk together without stepping on him.
Cat picsLook at the bowlegged stance on this little guy. He's quiet the toughie. He was the only one of his siblings to make it, so we know he's a fighter.
Cat picsTucker - 3 months old and 5 pounds.

"Look at what a big boy I am!" .
Cat picsTucker all tuckered out. We got new satiny sheets and he just curled right in for a nap.
Cat picsTucker giving Owen a good licking.

All of the cats are great about cleaning and taking care of each other.
Cat pics

Sophie and Tucker in the new den window. We had just had the window installed and the first time we opened it these 2 hopped up there.
Cat picsYou talkin' to me?

Tucker switches from being a tough, big boy cat to being little cuddler in a heartbeat.
Cat pics

Tucker drags his little stuffed pal all over the house. When he finally outgrew his bell, we put it on the toy.
Cat picsSophie is our only girl. This is her baby photo. She's a little caramel-colored tiger who is very sweet and sure of herself.
Cat pics

Sophie at 9 months. She looks so grown up.
Cat picsOwen meeting Sophie for the first time.

Okay, maybe Sophie was a little over-anxious to meet the boys, but that's the way Sophie is.
Cat pics

The first day or two was a little rough - lots of hissing and a few minor skirmishes.
Cat pics

But Sophie just isn't the kind of cat who takes no for an answer. She just makes herself at home.
Cat pics

It's going well. Owen is very good about playing with her and looking after her.
Cat pics

And Gus has done a fine job of keeping her clean.
Cat pics

Sophie enjoys reading with Gelina.
Cat picsAnd hanging out in the sun.
Cat pics

And, of course, napping with her big brothers.
Cat pics

Here's Sophie after a hard day of causing trouble.
Cat pics

Hold still, dammit, or I'll never get those ears clean.
Cat pics

Owen wraps himself around Sophie to keep her warm.
Cat picsSophie reaches for the camera lens.

She gave the lens hood a pretty good bat and Dave had to clean her paw print off the filter.
Cat pics

Owen and Sophie helping to wrap Christmas presents.
Cat pics

Sophie at 11 weeks old.
Cat pics

Owen giving Sophie a good licking.
Cat picsSophie being crazy.
Cat picsSophie is 5 months old here and is giving Dave her best annoyed teenager look.
Cat pics

Gus says, "Put treats here, please."
Cat picsOwen curled up on his favorite leopard pillow doing his king-of-the-jungle pose.
Cat picsGus in a dramatic pose.

He is so handsome and regal.
Cat picsGus posing for the camera.

He has such a sweet face.
Cat picsOwen stretching about as far as a cat can stretch.
Cat picsGus checking out his reflection.

Who is that handsome kitty in the mirror?
Cat pics

Gus taking it easy.
Cat pics

Has there ever been such a furry cat?
Cat pics

Pinned - Owen holds Dave down so he doesn't go anywhere.
Cat picsI'm ready for my close-up now.
Cat pics

Gus attacks - usually Owen starts the fight, but this time Gus launched a preemptive air strike.
Cat picsOwen is not at all pleased about being smooched up.
Cat pics

Talk to the paw - Gus is equally unhappy about getting his nails trimmed.
Cat picsOwen checking out Dave's new camera - an Olympus E510.
Cat pics

Just in the first few photos we've taken with the E510 you can tell that there's a huge difference in quality versus our old C5050.
Cat picsLook at the richness of Gus' fur.
Cat picsAnother shot of Gus posing for the camera.
Cat picsEven in little images like this, you can see the greater detail and tonal range of the E510.

Compare this shot to the next one.
Cat picsWhile Owen is still very handsome in this photo, our old camera just didn't do him justice.
Cat pics

Owen thinks that lying on the his back in the sun is one of the best things in life.
Cat picsWhile Gus just thinks that it makes Owen look pretty silly.
Cat picsOwen can be very focused and energetic, to put it mildly.
Cat picsWhile Gus is just a little more laid back.
Cat pics

All aboard - cat train now leaving the station.
Cat picsGus and his handsome heart-shaped face.
Cat pics

When Gelina broke her ankle (no, the other one this time) Owen took it upon himself to guard her leg. He rides around in the electric wheelchair with her and has even attempted to drive it a couple of times.
Cat picsBest buddies - Owen and Gus curled around each other for yet another nap.
Cat pics

Whoa Gus... that doesn't look very comfortable.
Cat pics

There that's better - all tucked in.
Cat pics

Who's not supposed to be in the kitchen window - that would be Owen.
Cat pics

Cat pile on the back of the couch.
Cat pics

Gus and Owen enjoying the view out the window. We think Owen views Gus as a big, furry pillow for his own personal use.
Cat pics

Owen content.
Cat pics

Copy cats.
Cat pics

Owen sprawled on the blanket in the sun.
Cat pics

Yes, I'm quite comfortable. Why do you ask?
Cat picsGus and Owen curled up for a nap. We're lucky that they get along so well.
Cat picsGus perched - looks like we're going to have to get bigger speakers.
Cat pics

Gus doing his Isabel Bloom cat impersonation.
Cat pics

Owen checking out the view from the den window.
Cat pics

Gus out like a light on the footstool.
Cat pics

Gus likes Gelina's new laptop. He lays on the mouse so she can't use it unless she pets him, too.
Cat picsThe Gus look - how could we NOT rescue him from the animal shelter?
Cat pics

Gus the jungle cat - they can't see me if I hide behind the palm tree.
Cat picsMirror, mirror on the floor - who's the cat that we adore?
Cat pics

Cat fight!
Cat picsTalk to the paw.
Cat pics

Making up.
Cat picsDude, I'm getting a Dell. Right? Because everything is always about me, isn't it?
Cat pics

Owen focused on the the blanket game - Gelina wiggles her fingers under the blanket and Owen tries to pounce on the mouse that just has to be under there.
Cat picsOwen wasn't happy about our leaving on vacation to Belize, so he tried to stop us from packing.
Cat pics

His Royal Hairiness Gus napping in the sun
Cat picsOwen says, "What? I didn't do anything, yet..."
Cat picsFor some reason known only to him, Owen decided to eat part of the mat in our weight room.

It lodged in his intestines, requiring emergency surgery to get it out.

Lucky we caught it in time. The vet said anther 12 hours and he might not have made it
Cat pics

They gave him a pain patch and he spent most of the next couple of days sleeping. We spent that time worrying about him.
Cat pics

Owen showing off his scar - they stapled him together from sternum to belly.
Cat picsDid the experience faze him?

What do you think?
Cat pics

Dave's Dad and Owen catch a nap together.
Cat pics

Not to be outdone, Gus makes sure he is groomed.
Cat pics

Gus sprawled.
Cat pics

More napping - this time with Gelina.
Cat pics

Owen - no self-assurance issues here.
Cat pics

Gus and Owen - oh yeah, that's the spot.
Cat picsSo who's the king cat here? Owen surveying his world from the top of Dave's PC.
Cat pics

Gus helps Dave work on the website.
Cat pics

Gus checks out the view from the living room window in our new house. This spot has become is favorite perch.

Cat picsHappy first birthday Owen!

He's grown quite a bit since we got him and you could hold him in one hand.
Cat pics

Gus settled in for a nap.
Cat picsOwen the thinker cat, "What kind of trouble can I get into next?"
Cat picsSamantha getting a drink from the faucet in the bathroom.

She meows until we run the water for her.
Cat pics

Feeding time for Owen, Gus and Sam.
Cat pics

Owen all wound up and ready to go.
Cat picsBrushing time. Owen is the only cat we've had who just loves to get his tummy brushed.
Cat picsAwwww Mom, quit smoochin' on me, would ya?!
Cat picsNow it's Gus' turn to get groomed and have his nails trimmed.

He's not as happy about it as Owen is, but he tolerates it with kind of a quiet indignity.
Cat picsOwen returning the favor and grooming Gelina.

He's very serious about it, and will hold your head still with a paw so he can do a thorough job.
Cat picsGus checking out the fish tank.
Cat picsHey - it's Spring!!!! Let me outta here so I can go chase that bird.
Cat picsSam and her shadow - when she sits in the sun her black fur gets so warm that when you pick her up it's like picking up loaf of fresh-baked bread.

Cat pics

Owen hard at sleep, curled up on Gelina's teddy bear.
Cat pics

Owen and Gus - the ying and yang of cats.
Cat picsSamantha perched on the head board of our bed.

Cat picsSam sprawled on the couch (or as sprawled as she ever gets).

Cat pics

Owen covers Gus's eyes so he gets a good nap.
Cat pics

A big yawn from Gus.
Cat pics

Hey! When is somebody going to get over here and scratch my belly?
Cat pics

Gelina reading Gus a bedtime story.
Cat pics

Mr. Regal.
Cat pics

Look who climbed up into our Christmas tree. It hadn't been up 5 minutes when Owen shimmied up there.
Cat pics

Owen and Samantha guarding the presents.
Cat pics

Owen using Gus as a pillow. Gus doesn't seem to mind, and he is very soft.
Cat pics

More sleeping on Gus.
Cat pics

Fish? What fish? I'm not looking at any fish. I don't know what you're talking about.
Cat pics

Now if I could just get this stinkin' lid off...
Cat pics

Gelina and Owen all snuggled up for a nap.
Cat picsSamantha and her shoebox. Woe be to anyone who tries to take it from her.

Cat pics

Owen is growing up fast and starting to look like a cat. As of November '04 he's already 6 pounds.
Cat picsSamantha and Owen playing in the Jacuzzi. It's like their own skateboard park. They tear around the sides and spin around chasing each other.

Cat picsOwen dries off after an unexpected dunking in said Jacuzzi.

He was very calm about it - just bobbing around until Gelina picked him out.

Cat pics

Look into my eyes. You are getting very, very, sleepy...
Cat pics

When he was just a little guy, Owen could fit in the sink.
Cat pics

Sam looking lovely in her pink basket. Hate to see what would happen to anyone who thought it was their pink basket.
Cat pics

A tired out Owen takes a nap with his stuffed pal.
Cat pics

Gus and Owen had been playing and Owen ended up with a tuft of Gus fur in his mouth.
Cat pics

Owen gets a belly rub. He has the prettiest pattern of stripes.
Cat pics

Gus and Owen get in a little grooming in before helping Gelina take a nap.
Cat pics

Owen all tuckered out after playing with the nephews.

Cat pics

All napped out - Part I
Cat pics

Part II - copy cat nap
Cat pics

Part III - hey, where's the rest of the cat?
Cat pics

Part IV - now this is they way to snuggle in.
Cat picsGelina and Owen.

Who's the luckiest cat in the world?

Cat picsOwen discovers the fern in the master bath. He beat the hell out of it for a minute and then went after the toilet paper roll. Ah, kittenhood.
Cat picsOwen has settled right in.

One of his favorite places to sit is on your shoulder. He perches there and then swats at your glasses.

Cat picsHe's an equal-opportunity snuggler.

Cat pics

Time for some licking.
Cat pics

Gus says, "Come here, you missed a spot." He's really taken Owen under his wing and is very good about grooming him.
Cat pics

They even play together pretty well.
Cat pics

Gus is 10lbs, Owen is 2lbs - but sometimes it looks like Gus gets the worst of it.
Cat picsHere I am, look at me!

Owen up close and personal.

Cat picsMy that's a big tongue you have there, Gus.

Cat picsGelina and Gus get in a snuggle.

He is a very sweet and gentle guy - more of a "cat" than Spencer was, but we love him just the same.
Cat pics

Gus taking a nap. He has a little brown streak under his jaw, so he always kind of looks like he's been a sloppy eater.
Cat pics

Gus has settled in pretty well and has the makings of a great cat.
Cat pics

He is one VERY fury boy. He even has little "feathers" of fur between his toes.
Cat pics

Samantha, our very pretty, black cat.
Cat picsGus licking the screen on our atrium door.

He is very into it, as you can tell in this movie.
Cat pics

Cat pics

Dave's Dad and Gus getting to know each other.
Cat picsHere's Spencer on the day we brought him home at 4 months old. We wondered if he would ever grow into those ears?

He was our joy boy - with an unbridled enthusiasm and a heart way bigger than he was. He brought a great deal of happiness into our lives and we miss him beyond words.
Cat pics

Spencer the krazy kat!!!!! Look at those fangs!
Cat pics

Spencer just hanging out and soaking up the sun.
Cat picsAll the critters - Samantha and Spencer keep an eye on the goldfish for us.

Nothing to see here, we've got it under control, chomp....
Cat picsSpencer checking out the latest snow storm.

It took him a while to figure out that he could use a paw to open the blinds.
Cat pics

But it took him no time at all to figure out that he could crawl through them. Hello there.
Cat pics

Cat sack - must be like Spencer's version of a duck blind.
Cat picsI see you - now just come a little closer so I can bat you really good.
Cat picsTime for a snuggle in the sun.
Cat pics

Spencer all tired out - for now.
Cat pics

Spencer helping Gelina learn how to knit.
Cat pics

Enough of that - now it's time for a nap.
Cat picsSamantha and Spencer stake out their respective claims to the couch.
Cat pics

Spencer says, "meow." Actually, he's just a little guy that it sounds more like a "meeep."
Cat pics

Quincy was Gelina's lover boy, and we were sorry to have to put him to sleep because of a tumor. He was the first cat we've ever lost, so this has been particularly tough on all of us. He was the best cat ever, and we miss him dearly.
Cat pics

Spencer playing in the sunshine. He is so much like Quincy that we often wondered if they hadn't "talked" before Quincy left us.
Cat pics

We got a new fish tank for the den. Here's Spencer trying to pet Mr. Sushi.
Cat pics

Hello, is anybody home?
Cat pics

Samantha (Princess) settles in for a nap.

Cat pics

S-T-R-E-T-C-H ! ! ! Spencer says "look how big I'm getting!"
Cat picsSpencer the yoga cat.

He just loves to be held upside down, and the way he crosses his little paws is just too darn cute.
Cat pics

Spencer making sure the new headboard is long enough for him to stretch out on.
Cat pics

Dad and Spencer discussing who gets what part of the couch.
Cat picsSince Spencer discovered the cursor on the PC. Dave does a lot of work while looking past a pair of kitty ears.
Cat pics

Awwww, I LOVE you Mom!!! (and the fact that your red flannel PJs are very warm and snugly doesn't hurt either).
Cat pics

Hey, what's this furry thing attacking me!?! Oh, it's my tail.
Cat pics

Nap time.
Cat pics

Nap Time Part II.
Cat pics

Nap Time III - Return of the Nap.
Cat picsQuincy decided that he really really liked the lilies that Gelina got for Mother's Day, so he rubbed himself all over them until he was covered in bright yellow pollen. Cat picsHe was a very unhappy, very yellow cat for almost a week.
Cat pics

Samantha is queen of the couch.
Cat picsQuincy really liked our new office furniture. It gave him a lot more room to spread out.

Here he is helping me edit some shots from our last snorkeling trip.

Cat pics

He thought that this one was pretty comfortable, even though it looked too small for him.
