Healthy(er) Cole Slaw

Some cole slaw recipes have at least a 1/2 cup mayonnaise in them. We like cole slaw, but not that much. This recipe uses light sour cream and low-fat buttermilk to create a tasty, creamy slaw with a whole lot fewer calories.

1/4 cup    reduced-fat sour cream
1/4 cup    buttermilk (powdered works fine)
1 to 2 tsp    cider vinegar
1 to 2 tsp    Worcestershire sauce
2 to 4 dashes    hot sauce
1 tsp    sugar
1 tsp    kosher salt
1 tsp    freshly ground black pepper
1 lb    bagged cole slaw mix (or about 1 small head cabbage shredded, 1/2 cup chopped onion, and a 1/4 cup shredded carrot)
  Optional:
  * 1 teaspoon celery seed and/or caraway seed
  * 1-2 tablespoons fine-ground prepared horseradish
  * 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil

Whisk together the sour cream, buttermilk, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, sugar, salt, pepper, and flavoring. In a large bowl, toss with the cabbage mix. Refrigerate at least a couple hours. It gets better with a little age.
